What the newly signed 'player-coach' contract will mean for this legendary Wales star
Legendary fullback Leigh Halfpenny has signed a new deal with Cardiff Rugby, confirming his return to action as a player-coach after nearly six months on the sidelines.
The former Wales star has completed his recovery from a calf injury and is once again fit and available for selection.
Initially brought in on a short-term basis as a kicking coach at the start of the season, Halfpenny will now combine that role with on-field duties as he makes his full playing return.
He has travelled with the squad as a reserve in recent weeks, but is now expected to be named in the matchday group for Saturday night’s EPCR Challenge Cup clash against Ulster.
Leigh-Halfpenny – Player Coach
Cardiff Rugby coach, Corniel van Zyl, said: “Leigh has obviously spent time helping our kickers and young full-backs during the past two months but has also worked hard to get himself back fit and available for selection.
“We are blessed to have some quality full-backs at the club but to add Leigh’s experience to the mix is brilliant. He continues to help the young players on a daily basis and gives us another option and further competition.”
During his previous seven years at Cardiff, Halfpenny made 87 appearances, scoring 568 points. The 36-year-old won both the Amlin Challenge Cup and Anglo-Welsh Cup during that time, while establishing himself as one of the game’s biggest stars.
In his illustrious career, Halfpenny has won 101 Wales caps, appeared in four Lions Test matches and won the Heineken Cup during his time with Toulon.
His last appearance was a 15-minute stint for Harlequins in Round 18 of the English Premiership against Bristol Bears, but prior to that, he had secured the starting shirt at the Twickenham-based club, even starting in the Champions Cup quarter final against Leinster in April of this year.
Currently sitting in second place in the United Rugby Championship, Cardiff are exceeding all expectations, and the return of the world-class Halfpenny will do them no harm.
Young Cam Winnett has been a staple at fullback for Cardiff since bursting onto the scene in 2021, so Halfpenny isn’t expected to disrupt the status quo in his return. But to have the quality and the experience of such a distinguished star at their disposal will give Cardiff the backing needed to push on in their quest for success this season.
